PAVEMENT MARKING

MCC has the equipment and experience to install all types of permanent pavement markings, both non-durable (lasting one year or less) and durable (lasting three years or more).

In selecting which type of material to use, consider all factors, such as: pavement type and condition, desired frequency of restriping, level of desired reflectivity, etc. Examine these factors to determine which product will offer the longest lasting, most reflective marking for all weather conditions.

PAINT

Traffic paint is a widely used pavement marking material. It is the lowest initial cost marking material and can be used on all pavement surfaces as both a temporary or permanent marking. Traffic paint is considered a non-durable marking needing annual restriping. Waterborne paint is water based. It is easy to clean up and is environmentally friendly, containing no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s). It can be applied over any existing material and on any pavement surface. Paint must be applied when temperatures are at least 50 degrees.

THERMOPLASTIC

Thermoplastic is a moderately priced durable pavement marking material. Thermoplastic is a granular material that becomes liquid when heated to 400+ degrees. Once applied, thermo hardens and bonds with the asphalt as it cools. It should be applied when temperatures are at least 50 degrees. It used on asphalt pavement and cannot be used on concrete pavement

PREFORMED PLASTIC

Preformed Plastic is a high priced durable material is supplied in rolls. Preformed plastic, or tape, can be applied by several different methods.
· The inlay method is either a process where the permanent tape is applied to new asphalt while it is still hot in advance of the finisher roller. The roller presses the material into the asphalt, depressing it slightly to help protect it from snow plow damage or when it is placed as a recessed marking in a groove.
· Surface applied method is a process where the tape is applied to existing pavement (asphalt or concrete) and tamped with a rolling device to ensure its bond to the surface. In some cases a liquid primer is applied to the pavement to strengthen the bond. While the material is very durable it is susceptible to snow plow damage unless it is recessed into the pavement.

PREFORMED THERMOPLASTIC

Preformed Thermoplastic (Hot Tape) is a hybrid between thermoplastic and preformed tape. It is a thermoplastic that is supplied in strips of different sizes or in symbols and letters. The material is applied to the pavement and then fused to the surface by the use of propane torches. It is the most expensive durable material but can be manufactured in various colors and shapes to produce very specialized markings such as bike symbols.

RECESSED REFL PAVEMENT MARKERS

Recessed Reflectors are installed into the pavement without an iron casting. They are installed into a “slot” cut in the pavement. The slot cut is made with one of our saw trucks. They are used in conjunction with any of the materials previously listed.

PURAL COMPONENT MARKINGS

Epoxy, Urethane, Polyurea, Multi-Polymer and Methyl Methacrylate are durable pavement markings with superior color retention.
Plural Components are durable pavement marking materials applied using specialized equipment. These markings are created by mixing two compounds during application, resulting in a highly durable finish with excellent color retention and reflectivity. These materials must be applied at temperatures above 35 degrees. For optimal adhesion, surface preparation is crucial, as it maximizes the bond between the marking material and the road surface.

RECESSECED PAVEMENT MARKING

Grooving for recessed pavement markings is a specialized process where a shallow, controlled groove is cut into the pavement to house reflective pavement markings or durable striping materials. This recessed placement protects markings from wear, snowplows, and heavy traffic, extending their lifespan and maintaining high visibility.

RAISED REFL PAVEMENT MARKERS

Snowplowable Raised Pavement Reflectors which are adhered to iron castings which are then installed into “plunge” cuts made into the pavement with a saw truck. They produce superior reflectivity at night, even in the rain. They are used in conjunction with any of the materials previously listed. They are not used by themselves

PAVEMENT MARKING REMOVAL

There are two methods of removing old or temporary pavement markings, grind and water blast. Maintenance Coatings can perform both methods.
